Once I upgraded my machine to SP2 performance stunk. It would take 10
minutes to load up the desktop, then 1 or two minutes to pop up the start
menu. Only a few programs would run.

MS tech support had me change registry setting

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rpcss\ObjectName=LocalSystem

This fixed the problem and the machine now runs normally.

Just thought someone would benefit from this bit of information.

I assume that you meant "RpcSs" ...without the quotes :-)

....and did you mean that this key, before you changed it, contained
ObjectName REG_SZ NT Authority\NetworkService

:-) ?

....I don't think I fancy doing that to mine !
