XP- SP2 & mpeg or mpg files

I apologize if this questoion has been covered here already, I didn't see
what I was looking for in the first 80,000 posts.

I am using XP home ed. and installed SP2. Everything seems fine so far with
the exception of not being able to view .mpg or .mpeg files from the
internet. They download and show as texy only (all looks Greek to me). Prior
to SP2 install they would download and play using windows media player as
default player. The few .mpg files that I had saved locally on my drive
played fine with windows media player when opened. So far I have found that
other media files play normally (.swf, .mp3, .rm, .mov, .wmv) with their
respective players. Mpegs seem to be the only bug.

Has anyone heard of this before?
Any help would be greatly welcomed. TIA Mark N.

What happens if you save these troublesome mpg's to theharddrive.
I assume they play OK then - you're having a problem getting them
to stream?

Yes streaming is the problem. As far as saving the files go, I am not given
the option of saving as a .mpg file, only .html is in the file type box

Not sure. It rings a bell though. Possible problem with the file
association?
