XP SP2 Mouse is not functioning

2 weeks after i have installed sp2 on my Dell dimension 8200 my mouse is not
working. I have concluded that both of my keyboard and mouse serial ports
work because my keyboard is in fact working right now in the mouse serial
port and works just as well in the port designated for the keyboard. I have
tried all of my mice and none work in either of the two ports(they work on
other computers in my house though). So now I believe it has come to a
software issue. My mouse settings for hardware do not show up in the
properties menu so I believe windows is not detecting the mice. I tried to
have windows manually detect my mice but nothing happened. I keep restarting
the computer but still does not detect new hardware.

Can someone please help me because its hard to maneuver around with just the
keyboard and the tab key!

Hi, bfeasel,

Suggestions: Go to the Dell Support site and check for drivers for your
mouse; Go to the Dimension Forum group for discussion of your problem.
Usually pretty good help from here, I've found.
Otherwise, my Dim.8200 came with the Dell Enhanced keyboard and
Intelli-mouse, 2 USB ports on tower back and 2 USB ports on front of tower, 2
USB ports on keyboard. If you have similar, try plugging your mouse into one
of the keyboard connectors. I was told to do this by a Dell Tech, and it
works for me...
Hope this helps.

Hey bobnrobin,

I did what you said: dell support site and searched for drivers.
Apparently, dell has no downloads for mice. I have a drivers and utilities
disk from dell and installed the software but still nothing happens and there
is no mouse listed under device drivers. I'll do what you said about going
to the dimension forum and I think I know what you talking about with the usb
ports on your keyboard. that's very cool. But I only have an older
replacement keyboard from my old compaq presario and I don't have a usb
connector on my mouse. I'll just have to purchase a usb mouse and get up to
date with the new trend. Thanks so much for your input!

Oooops !

You did, indeed, say Serial Ports not USB.... Well then, did you try going
to the Mfgrs. site for your mouse and see if there are updated drivers to
work with XP-SP2? (I have not yet installed SP2 on my XP Home, so don't know
if this is a possibility or not.) But do go to the Dell Forums. Does your
mouse show up in Control Panel ? How about add/remove Programs ?
Sorry, I was not much help...

Well here's the thing. Under device manager in the control panel there is no
mouse but there is a keyboard and everything else. Is it that simple, just
to download a mouse driver? It's got the black and grey dell logo on it
pretty standard-I would think things like this get automatically updated
through windows. I just don't know why it stopped working like that. One
day everything is peaches and cream and the next thing I know I'm tabbing all
over screens! I checked out the forums and there is just SOOOOO much
information.
