XP SP2 DSL connection problems

No problems before SP2. I've had ATT/Comcast cable for a
long time. Recently got Verizon DSL (cheaper but still on
trial). After SP2 Verizon DSL modem will not work. The
systray shows "network cable unplugged". Got Verizon to
send me a new modem, same problem. Hooked the old Comcast
Cable modem it works fine. Using the same cable, just
switching modems. The DSL has a dual connection and will
work using the USB cable. DSL also works on the ethernet
cable on Win98se machine. Bad NIC or bad SP2?

perhaps, it is not bad nic or sp2. it could be the hardware settings.

Look at the settings for TCP/IP filtering in the ethernet DSL
connection. TCP/IP properties, General tab, Advanced button, Options
tab, TCP/IP filtering properties. If the three ports/protocols are
Permit Only, then change to Permit All. See if that helps.

The TCP/IP Filtering was and still is set to "permit All"
Also noticed that when I tried to hook my network back up
using the Comcast Cable that the XP machine gives the same
error messages on the cable is plugged into the router as
the DSL. I do use a crossover cable from either modem to
the router. Again it worked on either modem before SP2.

This is a bit of a guess, but open a command prompt and enter "route
print". See if there are any IP addresses that begin with 127 that are
other than 127.0.0.1. If there are other addresses from that range, then
this may be your problem. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=884020
for more details and post back your "route print" results.
