Direct cable connection and DSL

Hey, I've had a direct cable connection here for a while now and we've just
got DSL put in. Previously we had a dial up connection where by the client
would access the net via the server and a network cable would connect the two
computers via their network cards. The network cards and cable are still in
place but now we have a DSL modem which is connected to a USB port instead of
the Ethernet port (there are 2 possible ways to connect the modem to the
computer) but it seems that we can't work out how to get the client computer
to access the net via the DSL connection and that sometimes when the DCC
(LAN) connection is enabled from the network neighbourhood, it causes the net
to disconnect.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, you don't connect the computer to the DSL port on the
modem. The DSL port gets the DSL cable provided to you by the ISP and
that cable goes to the phone jack. Now use the ethernet (not usb) port
and ethernet cable to connect to one computer's network adapter.

You can continue to use ICS if you want, but a better solution is to
purchase a router. Then the setup is that the DSL modem gets connected
to the router's Internet port by the ethernet cable that used to go
directly to a computer. The various computers now get connected to the
router's LAN ports with ethernet cable.
