DSL connectivity problem; error 12007

Have lost ability to connect to web via DSL. Desktop balloon message:
"Limited or no connectivity." Cables and connectors all swapped & checked -
no problem there.

IP Configuration section of Network Diagnostic report shows "error in
renewing IP address: the semaphore timeout period has expired." HTTP, HTTPS,
FTP Diagnostics all showing Error 12007. "Server name or address could not be
resolved. Could not make an HTTP connection."

Automated repair attempts using configuration utilities fail and result in a
"error renewing IP address" message.

I believe my modem is working properly (diplay lights behaving normally).
When I disconnect the phone line that feeds the modem, and plug it directly
into the dial-up port on my tower I am able to connect to the internet
without problem. So why can't I connect via LAN port?!

Thanking in advance any of you who might be able to steer me in the right
direction....

Have you checked if there is a new firmware for the router and new driver
for the NIC? Or this troubleshooting may help.

Troubleshooting limited or no connectivity"This connection has limited or no
connectivity. " "You might not be able to access the Internet or some
network resources" ...

Dial-up is an analog modem which usually requires a DSL filter on the
phone line, to isolate the voice signals from the DSL signal.

What do you have connected to the Ethernet LAN port? DSL modem or ra
router?

If it is a DSL modem, then the DSL unit maty have become defective.

Your description suggests one of two likely problems: (1) either your
DSL modem is not working, despite its front panel lights, or (2) there
is a problem with your DSL service (which could be anywhere from your
ISP to the telephone company central office to the wires between the
central office and your wall jack).

That the modem lights are on does not necessarily mean it's working
correctly, and that you can connect via dial-up using the same telephone
line does not necessarily mean that the wiring is adequate for the DSL
signal.

Try turning the DSL modem off (disconnect the power cord if there is no
on/off switch) for about 30 seconds. Turn off your computer. Power up
the DSL modem and wait for the lights to stabilize. Boot up your
computer. If you still have a problem, call your ISP.

That means the pc cannot get a LAN ip address from the modem/router's
dhcp server. Presumably this used to work and you haven't changed any
settings on the pc and router?

If you have awapped the cables and connectors does that mean you are
in a position to test it with a different pc? That could narrow the
problem down somewhat.
