Networking Two Computers

Greetings,

I am renting a home which has a computer that is a part of the rental
package.

The computer is a Dell connected to Verizon DSL service via a Westell
2100 Wirespeed DSL modem. The connection from the modem to the computer
is via a USB cable. The Ethernet cable port is unoccupied. I would like
to connect my laptop (also a Dell) to the Internet via the Ethernet
port on the modem. Is that possible? I ran a cable from my laptop to
the DSL modem but could not get a connection. I'm not sure if any of
this is possible but if it is I'd appreciate you help.

Yes, it's possible:

1. Connect the Ethernet ports of the two computers using a crossover
Ethernet cable. A regular Ethernet cable won't work, and the
computers will say that a network cable is unplugged.

2. Enable Internet Connection Sharing on the main computer's USB
network connection:

a. Open the Network Connections folder.
b. Right-click the USB network connection.
c. Click Properties.
d. Click Advanced.
e. Put a check mark in the box "Allow other network users to
connect through this computer's Internet connection".
f. If there's a box for selecting the home network connection,
select the Ethernet connection.
g. Click OK.

Thanks for that. Tomorrow I'll go out and try to find the correct
Ethernet cable (I suspect mine is not a crrossover cable) and try your
suggestions. I'll let you know how it works.

When I go to <Start>, <Settings>, <Network Connections>, I don't see a
"USB network connection" selection to right click on. I see a "Local
Area Connection 3" and an "Incoming Connections" .

If I right click on either of those I get taken to the properties
dialog window but I see no way to to get to an "Advance" window nor any
way to select the box "Allow other network users to connect through
this computer's Internet connection".

I do have the two computers connected with a crossover cable and the
Ethernet light on the front of the modem is blinking (or stready).

I tried running the Network Setup Wizard on each computer but I can't
get them to talk. ANy ideas?

Rick, are you looking on the computer that has the USB connection to
the DSL modem? I'd expect to see a network connection for the DSL
modem there. Is there anything else in the Network Connections folder
-- a dial-up, broadband, or PPPoE connection? That could be it.

Here's a different possibility. According to this web page, the
Westell 2100 is a DSL modem and router:

That means that it can share a DSL connection between multiple
computers using Ethernet instead of USB. The web page describes how
to set everything up by connecting a network switch between the DSL
modem and the computers.
