Please can anybody offer me any sensible advice I am pretty desperate I
Installed XP SP2 hoping that if it did not functin ok I could easily restore
to a previously good checkpoint.

It Installed fine but on the reboot at the end it now just keeps looping and
rebooting when windows comes up. It flashes a blue screen which one cannot
read. I have on occasions been successful with f to look at what it says at
first it was a BAD_POOL_CALLER STOP X0c error. It now seems to be
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_EQUAL ERROR .

I cannor even get into safe mode or load system that previously was good. I
am stuck well and truly and desperatly do not want to re-install original xp
and start all over again.

Is there anyway that I can move forward please. I can only assume that a
drive is causing the problems but I cannot get to the bottom of it and do
not now know what is best.

I would be very grateful for advice

Hi

Please try the following link to Jim Eshelman's web site - left hand
column(D1):

http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

If that doesn't correct the problem, and you still can't access Windows, you
may have to think about a 'Repair' install of XP - especially if you can't
use 'Last Known Good Configuration' or access Safe Mode for a System
Restore.

Hi Colin

A 'Repair' install is where XP is installed over the top of itself to
correct any system problems - such as not being able to boot into Windows.
With this, files, programs and settings should remain intact. This is
opposed to a 'Clean' install where the hard disk/partition is formatted,
then XP is re-installed.

The following article by Michael Stevens gives details of how to perform a
'Repair' install:

"How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install"
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

How did you install SP2? If via Windows Update, and you haven't got a
slipstreamed SP2 CD, a 'Repair' install will revert XP to the version that
is on the CD used to perform the 'Repair' install. You will get an error
message warning you of this. If you proceed you will have re-install SP2
afterwards.

Once I have put my system back will I be able to use any of the restore
points or will those now be deleted ?

Hi Colin

If you're happier using a previous of XP, then do that. A lot of people
seem to have done the same - tried SP2, didn't like it, then reverted to an
earlier version. The System Restore checkpoints will be lost when you
reinstall XP.

Thanks again I installed sp2 from a cd given with PCPRO Magazine, but I am
scared to re-install after I have put my system back to the original XP.

Once I have put my system back will I be able to use any of the restore
points or will those now be deleted ?

Many thanks for your help on this I am using my win2k basic laptop to access
email it looks like I am in for some real hard work as I have so many
devices (mainly usb and firewire) connected and I had problems getting all
the correct drivers etc. which i guess the re-install will overwrite.

I was VERY happy with XP and did not really feel that SP was necesarry but I
did expect that the restore points would work. I guess I have no other
alternative is there any real sure way to fix my problem other than this ?

Again I do really appreciate your taking the time to help me Will

Hi Colin

If you can't access Windows 'normally', nor can you use 'Last Known Good
Configuration' or access Safe Mode for a System Restore, I can't see any
other option. There is one other possible way, but you would need to have a
backup of the Registry available from a 3rd party program.

Hi Colin

I use a Program called ERunt to backup/restore the Registry. If you are
using FAT32, then the Registry can be restored from 'DOS' by booting the PC
with a Win 9x Emergency Boot Disk. It may not work, but has saved my system
on numerous occasions - including not being able to boot the PC.
