XP SP2 Crashes wwhen trying to detect blank CD media

I just did a fresh install of Windows XP with SP2 this past Tuesday and when
I tired to burn some files to a disk, XP crashed after I inserted a blank CD
in my Lite-On LTR 52246S CD-RW. I have turned auto play off for the drive and
it is set to be a recordable drive in it's properties. I have even
uninstalled all of the Nero burning software and I still crash when inserting
a blank CD-R disk. I have run all the updates at Windows Update when I
installed the OS. I even upgraded the firmware of my drive, all to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated.

People usually forget that you need to install motherboard chipset drivers.
These usually have IRQ control, AGP slot and UltraDMA IDE drivers for you
motherboard.

Try a different drive. If you don't experience any problems, you know
the original drive is toast and should be discarded.

Fisrt, I have installed all the latest drivers for my hardware. Second, the
drive reads media that is already written and I have installed software from
said drive. It will even read data CD's I have created. My rig crashes when a
blank CD is inserted into the drive. I have to reboot the entire machine in
order to recover from it. I didn't have said problem with Win2000 Pro even
last week when backing up information, I was able to burn data disks with no
problems. This just started happening with the installation of XP with SP2.

For future reference to those who need help. It seems that Windows XP does
not like IDE/SCSI controller cards with optical drives connected to them. My
rig has a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and a CD-RW along with 2 HDs. All are PATA and
thereby need to be connected to an IDE controller of some sort, whether
native to tne motherboard or with an add in controller. My CD-RW as connected
to the add in controller as I had it when I was using Win2000 Pro.

Placing the burner on the secondary channel with the CD-ROM even as a slave
allowed Windows to recognize the media and not crash. Testing showed that
data burned to the disk was not corrupted or anything.

This information was verified by a friend using XP with SP1 after he
configured his rig similar to mine. His rig crashed once blank media was
inserted into the drive when connected to an add in controller.

I notice that there are lots of threads with media recognition problems.
Maybe making sure the drives that are to be used for burning purposes are
connected to the motherboard.
