XP/sp2 Auto-Update Service takes over system CPU

A friend's computer becomes unusable a minute or two after login. I found
its the automatic service causing this [97+% of CPU]; disabling the service
makes the system usable.

Is the problem the auto-update service itself, or an update that can't be
installed, or??? I don't know how to tell what updates are pending and might
be contributing to the problem.

We'd appreciate any help! Thanks

Edit: "automatic service" == "automatic-update service"... careless last
moment editing error, sigh.
