XP SP2 and Intel chipset update

Hi all

The Manual for the pertaining Intel software says:
"Some Intel chipset platforms already are supported by Windows XP so it may
not be necessary to use the INF files provided by this software to update
Windows XP."

Question: Does this mean that the chipset of a 3 years old mainboard (MSI
865PE Neo2-LS) may be automatically updated by Windows Update? Where to check
and verify? Or, if not, what does this mean?

(I need to update Bios and possibly chipset because of difficulties with USB
connecting to mp3 players)

TIA - flowe

Sorry, posted already in Windows Update NG

Windows Update does not generally carry updates for chipset drivers..

From what I see on the MSI page,

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=433&kind=1

the USB driver has not been updated since 2003, and is for use only with Win
9x anyway.. XP natively supports USB..

BIOS should only be updated if the revision fixes your particular problem,
and it doesn't look like it does from the BIOS files available..

Hi Mike Hall,
and thanks a lot for answering.
Windows Update does not generally carry updates for chipset drivers..
That leaves the question what Intel really wants to say...?
From what I see on the MSI page,
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=433&kind=1
the USB driver has not been updated since 2003, and is for use only with Win
9x anyway.. XP natively supports USB..
....and ongoing XP updates will attend to USB2 drivers.
Might depend too on the interface between XP and mobo?? Who does what?
BIOS should only be updated if the revision fixes your particular problem,
and it doesn't look like it does from the BIOS files available..

Please let me briefly outline my problem:

I can't access two different mp3 players for firmware updates. With an iPod
nano,
the iTunes application freezes and requires reboot, and with a SanDisk
player and
update loader, this after say one minute breakes off with a msg. that the
firmware
update failed. Neither support hotline has been able to help, in spite of
really
honest efforts.

So every conceivable remedy has been tried and again, e.g. as per Apple
website
troubleshooting procedures, but no use. Windows XP is on regular update, and
the
whole machine works without any noteworthy problems - apart from this:

*********
I can't update the mp3 players.
*********

Current chipset drivers on my machine: v6.2.1.1001, Intel latest 8.1.1.1001
and explicitely stating "improved USB support"

Current Bios v2.1, MSI/AMI latest 2.5,
with the statement of "updated USB code" for v2.3.

What would you do??

I'm not keen at all on fiddling with the mobo of a stand alone machine with
soldered in Bios chip, although I flashed it ok on installing the mobo -
early
in 2004.

What would you suggest?
Many thanks again

You still are able to update to an Intel version of the chipset driver that
would/may work well in XP. Look on Intel's web site.

By all means flash the BIOS with the latest version if you feel comfortable
doing so..

Re. the MP3 players, do they work normally apart from you being able to
update their firmware?

For the 875/865 chipset, you need to go back to 12/05 for an installation, the
current updated installations run,but the 2 seconds that they do,thier not
installing, the chipset installation utility takes 12-18 seconds...

@mike Hall
Re the MP3 players, do they work normally apart from you being able to update their firmware?
Actually, the iPod(s) went back to the store, because of the update issue
(freeze/reboot) and because you can't listen to mp3 files transferred at
Windows level, away from DRM. The SanDisk is less stringent and works ok, but
the software keeps announcing a firmware update. I'm keen on this, because of
a nasty bug: the repeat function none/one/all is faulty, ie. "all" is
indicated and acts as such, while "none" is indicated as "none", but acts as
"all" too.

Re Bios: I intend to flash to v2.5, which is out since 2004 and still the
newest published by MSI - probably wouldn't be anymore if a desaster. I know
the procedure using the harddisk - and there is a worst case emergency
procedure too ;-/

Re chipset drivers: undecided yet. Intel sternly advise against updating if
avoidable at all - if only a legal precaution. I'll try to get an
"innocuousness" statement from MSI regarding this particular mobo and the
Intel INF software v8...

I've been asked in the MSI forum
http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=102265.0
whether firewall (Kerio) or AntiVir might interfere with the update.
This has been tested, but I'll do it again just to make double sure.

I thank you all for your comments and questions, helping me to better decide
- I'm aware of the risks and possible benefits.
