Intel Chipset Driver Problem

Hi!

I am running my ThinkPad T40 with Windows98 Second Edition. The wireless
adapter has to be disabled in the device manager, otherwise Windows will
hang at bootup with a protection error. Last entry in protocol.txt is
"Initing esdi_506.pdr". If the wireless adaptor is enabled the device
manager looks fine but next boot will always stop with that protection
error. The only way is to disable the wireless card in safe mode: after
reboot everything seems to be fine.

In device manager I can see the "Intel 820801DBM Ultra ATA Storage
Controller", but the driver info shows that "esdi_506.mpd" is loaded,
regardless which version of the Intel INF updater was installed. Also the
installation of "Intel Application Accelerator" always interrupts because it
doesn't find any supported chipset. The documentation of Intel INF Update
mentions that "intelATA.mpd" and "intelVSD.vxd" are the drivers which have
to be loaded if the chipset is installed correctly. But I couldn't find
these 2 files on my hdd.

In safe mode I have manually removed all entrys of the storage controller
from the registry. I also installed the original Windows drivers with the
INF-files extracted from the Windows setup CD, than I tried to update the
chipset drivers with the Intel INF updater. I also checked if there is a
"noide" entry in the registry. And I installed the updated esdi_506.mpd from
the MS Website... What else can I do? Windows runs in ACPI mode, because IBM
told me that my ThinkPad would work both in ACPI mode and in APM mode of
Windows 98 SE. Finally I removed the wireless adaptor and installed a new
one which is a very different model. But exactly the same problem remains.

I would be very glad if you held me with this problem!

It may not be for Windows 98, but it certainly is not XP either !
I don't have an answer Jun, although I am interested in the solution.
