Anyone know anything about the file
\system32\simpdata.tlb? When I try to update XP with
Service Pack 1 using the compact disk media, during the
file-verify step, I get an error message telling me that
the file ...\system32\simpdata.tlb is in use by another
process/application and I must end the process before
installation of the update can continue. I can find
nothing in any XP MS Knowledge Base article about this
file as it might relate to problems it can cause during
the XP SP1 update. Perhaps I should try it using the
Windows Update internet utility? Thanks.

Hi Chris,

It's an IE file, though why it should come up as "in use" during setup is
curious. Have you shut down all running applications, especially AV, prior
to initiating the installation?

Thanks for the response. To my knowledge, there were no
other apps running during the install. However after these
attempts, I discovered that IE was not configured as my
default browswer and in fact the setup began by starting a
Netscape Navigator window. I also discovered that
shortcuts to bookmarked links that I had saved to the
desktop with IE were also opening with Navigator. I
suppose both of these situations should have been a clue
that something wasn't right. I've since made IE the
default browser and soon I'll try the update again. Thanks.
