XP SP1 or SP2 ?

A

Andy100

I have heard nasty stories about SP2 for WinXP, people saying that it
destroyed their system, knocked out USB ports etc etc. That's why i have
avoided upgrading to SP2.

My question is, i have SP1 on a PC disc but have not installed it yet,
should i risk installing SP1 just to get USB2.0. Apart from getting USB2.0,
what else will i get from SP1, what does it actually mean to my system and
will i notice any difference to my software, will any of my software not
work as a result and can i uninstall SP1 if there are any problems ?

Sorry for the long winded question ?

Cheers
Andy

SP2 is a solid, secure release. It is a major "Critical Update"
for Windows XP and updates over 5 million lines of code,
enabling much stronger security, stability, and affords a tad better
performance benefit. SP2 was extensively tested on hundreds of
thousands of various computer configurations over a period of
many, many months. I would encourage you to install it at your
earliest convenience since it renders SP1 virtually obsolete.

Thanks for the detailed info, i heard i had to re-install XP to upgrade to
SP2 incase my machine had any worms/viruses/spyware etc (i.e. install on a
'clean' machine). I wasn't keen on reformatting and backing up just purely
to get USB2.0. That's why i have lived with USB1.1 for so long. I was hoping
that there was an easier way to get USB2.0 to work without too much hassel.

I am currently looking into getting some sort of cable to connect mu USB HD
to my Firewire to get it running faster than USB1.1 (which is why i'm here
in the ng in the beginning !)

Andy, I was as comprehensive as you about installing SP2 after reading all
the negative reports on here, but I have put it (from the disk) on my two
home PC's, and just today loaded it on a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop. I
have had no, nada, zilch, problems on any of the three. We also loaded it
onto a friends Dell and another's Sony. I would recommend you go for IF
your computers are clean (programs wise). All 5 are running better. Your
eventually, I'm told going to have to have SP2.(?)

Sorry for the long winded question ?

I've watched this newsgroup during both the SP1 and SP2 releases, and I
believe that MORE problems were reported with SP1 than with SP2. You might
have a problem with SP1. You might with SP2. But IMO you're at greater
risk if you don't upgrade at all.

To improve your odds of having NO problems, you just have to be a little bit
sensible. Make sure your PC is clean: no viruses, no spyware, no H/W
problems. Make sure your PC is up-to-date: the latest BIOS, the latest
drivers. Check your PC manufacturer's website to see if any special
cautions or updates apply. Check your critical apps's websites to see if
any special cautions or updates apply. Make sure you back up all your
critical files. And you might consider installing SP1 first, then SP2, so
that if there are any problems after SP1, you can fix them before taking the
next step.

Mind you, this advice just not just apply to SP2: it applies to any major
upgrade. You could still have a problem: Murphy's law applies; but the
odds are better than not upgrading at all.

( Sorry for the long-winded answer. ;-)

Andy;
You are just as likely to have problems with either.
I feel the SP-2 issues are less but I can not prove either way.

If you are going to install one or the other install SP-2 and then you
have the latest.

Also making sure the computer is ready in advance reduces the
possibility of problems related to SP-2:

Andy,

Go ahead and do a clean install of Windows XP SP2 version (you get this by slipstreaming the original windows with SP2). You don't need SP1 at all. This is called skipping one generation!

You will, however, need a pirating tool currently supplied exclusively by Micky Mouse Stevens called ViewKey by MagicalJelly to get the serial numbers for your Windows and Office 2k, Office XP and/or Office 2003. Also, do the preparation of slipstreaming the Windows so that life becomes a bit easier and installation robust without much hiccups!

The fact that SP2 has modified 5m lines of code is no gurantee that it is going to work on all machines. Monkeys can change 10m lines of code - does this make Windows any secure? So don't listen to that idiot Carrie who's brain is located below the belt.

The only person who has some sense is Jupitor Jones who has managed to bed about 3000 women in Philipines and Thailand and who has about 6 illegitimate kids he has reneged his obligations completely!

Hope this helps.

Hi Anny,

Thanks you for posting here.

I have read through all four posts you submitted. The questions in these
four posts are related. In order to avoid confusion, let me answer your
questions in the one titled "Such thing as Firewire to USB cable/connector
?", If you have any concern, please also post back in that thread.

Thanks and have a nice day!
