USB2.0 (sorry for my ignorance)

As you can see from my previous posts i have XP Pro, no service packs
installed (never ever had a problem, i have NAV2005 / Zone Alarm Pro and
they seem to keep nasties away). I want USB2.0 for my USB HD, so i decided
reluctantly to download SP1. I was about to install it when i had a horrible
thought. Am i right in assuming that if i install SP1 that my USB will
automatically be USB2.0, or will i need to get a PCI USB2.0 card ?

My motherboard is only 11 months old, but i'm not sure of the make. I might
be installing SP1 thinking i'd get USB2.0, but my Motherboard might not be
enabled ? is that right ??

Also, does SP1 have its own uninstall facility if things go wrong ??

1. Read your motherboard manual to see if the on-board USB controller
supports USB2. If it doesn't have the function available in 'hardware' SP1
or SP2 can't magically make it happen. To get USB2 if not on-board, yes you
will need to buy a USB2 PCI card.

2. You won't find SP1: we are now at SP2. And yes you can uninstall it if
required.

You need USB 2.0 hardware to use USB 2.0 - period.

Do you have it, or do you not? Only you can find out by reading the specs
that are in your computer manual! If you do NOT have native capabilities,
you will have to install an addin board to obtain them.

Install Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties and then the Hardware tab.
Click on Device Manager. Scroll down to Universal Bus Controllers and expand
{click on the + to expand}. Look for an entry that says USB 2.0, Enhanced
Host Controller etc. The exact terms may vary. If you find such an entry,
you have USB 2. If not, you do not.

The above check may work without installing SP 2. Or, it may not. I have
no way of checking.

Thanks, i checked there, but all that's listed is:-
'Generic USB Hub' (listed twice, as i have 2 hubs),
'USB Mass Storage Device' (listed twice) properties for one of these say
USB2.0 but i think thats the Mass Storage Device being USB2.0, not the ports
????,
'USB Printing Support' (listed once),
'USB Root Hub' (listed twice),
'VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller' (listed twice)

Does this help to anyone more expert than me, is it looking like i will need
an extra USB2.0 PCI card ??

Thanks
Andrew
