XP SP1 install screwed up my machine

J

James

I installed SP1 and half-way through it started to tell
me "Windows could not load the installer for Modem.
Contact you hardware vendor for assistance."

Now my modem doesn't work anymore. It worked fine on
COM3, but now it thinks it is COM1.

In the device driver list everything is great. But the
modem doesn't work.

Help is appreciated.

Duhh, I tried that of course.
But it is not the modem. It sits in my device list
fantastico with the correct speficiation and driver, which
windows tells me works fabulous. And is not conflicting
with anything.

No it is a windows issue alright.
Help,
James

Check the compatibility using the Advisor anyway.

Reinstall the modem or new driver.

James,
It sounds like my girlfriend had the same problem you do.
To find out if the same solution will work see if you have
another problem just like her. Go to the Internet
Connection Wizard to see if you can setup another dialup
connection, if the "Connect using a dial-up modem" option
appears dimmed and can not be clicked, then you have the
same problem and the link
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;320558&Product=winxp will help you.
Good Luck.

If you try to install Modem drivers, and you get the error:
"Windows could not load the installer for Modem"
Verify that the 3 Modem Installer comonents are in \Windows\System32\ folder:
- mdminst.dll
- msports.dll
- uniplat.dll
Most Likely, "uniplat.dll" is missing. Google for the file, Download it, Get Properties on it and "UnBlock" it, and move it into the \Windows\System32\ folder.
Current version of this file, as of SP2, is 5.1.2600.2180

Now, Re-Register the mdminst.dll:
regsvr32.exe %SystemRoot%\System32\mdminst.dll
When you do this, Windows may give you the warning,
"The module 'c:\windows\system32\mdminst.dll' was loaded,
but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found."
but that's OK, it should still work. Try loading Modem drivers now.

You may also want to verify that you have the latest Windows Installer loaded:
Type "msiexec" into the Run box and hit return.
Current version, as of SP2, is 3.01.4000.1823 (aka, ver 3.1)
You can Re-Register the Windows Installer by running:
regsvr32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\msi.dll
