Help setting up COM port

I have a Garmin GPS that connects to the PC with a serial interface cable.

My PC has one DB9, but I have never been able to use the GPS with this
computer. I was successful using it with my old W98 machine and it works fine
on my W2000 workstation at work.

My PC simply doesn't see the device attached. I will add that it was the
mapping software that would 'find' the attached GPS.

Device Mgr showed COM1 and the internal modem uses COM3. I added COM2 and
COM4 using 'add new hardware'. Configured them using resources and IRQ's so
that it shows no conflict.

However, Dev Mgr shows the 'black ! on yellow' icon indicating a problem and
both show 'Code 10'.

This problem predates the installation of SP2.

This is where my knowledge ends. Will appreciate any help on getting the new
COM ports working.

Com 1 and 3 use the same interrupt....therefore your device on "physical"
com1 and the internal modem are trying to use the same IRQ

see if you can switch the internal modem to com2 ...it may resolve your
problems

(or you could try this...remove the internal modem , reboot , install GPS on
com1 then reinstall the internal modem ...it should set itself up on a
non-conflicting IRQ)

I have the connector. Came with some diagnostic package a few years ago.

But I'm not sure I know how to use it to test the port.

Click Start->Programs->Accessories->Communication->Hyperterminal

Choose to connect directly to comm port1 with any settings, no handshaking.
Type in the terminal windows. Characters should not display unless the
loopback connector is in place. Plug it in type. Unplug it and type..etc..

If you get an error that the port is already open, go into device manager
and disable the serial pointing device XP installed when you booted up with
the GPS attatched. Try again.

Chris,

Hyperterminal reports that another program is using the device, with or
without the loopback plug.

There is no device loaded as the system is not seeing the device when
booting. But then, it never did. It was the mapping software that detects the
port the GPS is connected.

Haggis,

I first uninstalled the COM2 and COM4 ports I had created with 'add new
hardware.'

Then I changed the port for the modem to COM2.

Then I disabled the modem on COM2.

Nothing helped.

System Information and Device Manager show COM1 working. Comdisable shows
only COM1, working.

Did you look in device manager and see if there is a serial pointing device
installed? XP has habit of misinterpreting data from a GPS as if it were a
serial pointing device. At which point it installs the drivers and hands
over the port, preventing anything else from using the port.
