XP SP1

The first time I did a fresh load after a complete
format, XP worked fine. I then decided to download the
upgrades that I wanted or were suggested. After
downloading SP1 and rebooting, I could no longer connect
to the web using either the NIC no the dial up modem. I
called my ISP and asked for assistance thinking I did
something wrong. I was told that SP1 doesn't work
properly and causes different problems on different
machines. I am running an MPC, Milwaukee PC built,
machine with a PIII 933mhz processer with 312meg of
memory.
I completely formated the machine again, and reloaded XP.
I then loaded all necessary patches except SP1. I am
afraid to do so not knowing what will happen. Now I have
attempted to download a puzzle from my favorite site,
Jigzone, but it says that I require the latest JAVA
download. I attempted the download the JAVA software but
it didn't take. I believe this is because the JAVA site
said that I need XP1 with SP1 installed.
Is SP1 safe to download?
Can I get the necessary JAVA download without SP1?
Can anyone help me?
Please send replies to my home email address above.
Thank You
Rick

You can download the latest Java VM from www.sun.com .

As for SP1 causing problems making network connections, this would be the
first time I've head that. Hopefully, someone knows more about that.

I think your ISP has some low experience tech support. I have installed SP1
on many machines with ZERO problems

Microsoft has heard of this problem. Check out this KnowledgeBase Article for
some helpful info. It worked for me on several systems.
