XP Pro | MS Office 2003 | SP2 | SP1 | Possible Conflict with MS-Recommended Update of Earlier SP Ver

Wondering

I recently reformatted my hard drive and installed Windows XP Pro and
SP2.

I have now also loaded Microsoft Office 2003, which led to a "check
for downloads" prompt and to the online Microsoft download center.

The download that is offered there, as an update to Microsoft Office
2003, is SP1.

On the one hand, I am concerned that downloading SP1 at this point
will produce conflicts with the already installed SP2. On the other,
I am concerned that not downloading SP1 will not allow MS Office 2003
to function properly.

(1) Does SP2 cover everything that would be included in SP1?

(2) Is it true that SP1 is necessary to update MS Office 2003 if I
already have SP2 installed (which updated my XP Pro operating system)?

(3) If SP1 is necessary to update MS Office 2003, will conflicts
occur, considering the load sequence of SP2 and SP1 is backwards?

Has anyone here tried to install SP1 (for the MSO 2003 update) after
SP2 was already installed for the system update? What results did you
have?

Thank you for any and all assistance.

These are 2 separate products service packs.
You have Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Office 2003 Service Pack 1.
There leis no relationship between the two; one is for the opertaing system
and the other is for the application.
They are both service packs as that is a just a generic name for this type
of rolled up packages of fixes and enhancements.

Yes you can install Office SP1 after Windows XP SP2

You are getting very confused. They are TWO entirely different downloads -
WINDOWS XP SP2 and OFFICE SP1. They are completely separate. XP SP2 is for
the OPERATING system, (Windows XP) and Office SP1 is for Office, NOT windows
XP.

You're a bit confused on the sp's. Windows has it's own service packs.
Windows in on service pack 2. Office also has it's own service packs. Office
is on service pack 1. Neither service packs have anything to do with each
other and are only for their specific product.
If you have windows sp2 and if you have office 2003 then yes get SP1 for
office 2003.

I had Office XP installed then updated it to SP3 then installed Office
2003 over the top of that as an update and then updated 2003 to SP1
with no problems. 2003 kept all my XP settings.

It sounds as if you have done the 2003 installation as a new
installation rather than an update, so you have both XP and 2003
installed (in separate folders, I assume). That's a bit of a waste,
unless your XP has a component like Front Page that 2003 doesn't have.

However, now that you have both, you should update XP to SP3 and 2003
to SP1, both from the Office Update site.

I don't see any burning reason to keep both - suggest you get rid of
Office XP, unless you really need Front Page or else can't reinstall
it separately.

Sorry, disregard that reply, I misread your original post. As others
have said, Windows and Office are separate products and have separate
update lists. Windows XP is at SP2, Office XP is at SP3, and Office
2003 is at SP1. Do them in any order and they won't interfere.

You're confusing two completely different types of service packs.
Service Pack 2 is for the operating system only. The Office Service
Pack 1 will not have any affect upon the Windows service pack.

Thank you very much, Peter. The clarification (as to the respective
SP1, SP2, and SP3 updates) is greatly appreciated.
