XP SP 2

HELP! I left my PC installing SP 2 last night. Today
there was just the wallpaper (no tool bars or anything
else. Turned it off and on again, but now the screen is
totally blank apart from the mouse cursor and a brief
appearance of a Windows message box (I think it says
preparing to stand by) when I turn the power off. What
happened?

Without much detail, I wonder if this is causing the problem:

Norton Personal Firewall 2.5 and Internet Security 3.0 Do Not Work in
Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308324&Product=windowsxpsp2

Excerpt:
After you install any of the following programs and then restart
your computer, you may be unable to log on and see the desktop:

Norton Personal Firewall 2000 2.5
Norton Personal Firewall 2001 3.0
Norton Internet Security 2000 2.5
Norton Internet Security 2001 3.0

When this occurs, no error message may be displayed.

Have a look at my post under the "do you know what the error message means"
thread. It is not good, MS has made a real mess of this SP install. I spent
about 6 hours repairing 2 computers yesterday that had SERIOUS sp2 problem,
not unlike your own. It is scary to see all these posts i the newsgroups.
