XP Pro will not start other than in safe mode

Dell Precision with SCSI drives installed autoupdates this morning but would
not close down to re-start and had to be shut down.
Now will only boot in safe mode.
SCSI drivers start and Windows XP starts, blank screen for second, back to
start screen, num lock, caps lock, scroll lock lights flash, then screen goes
blank and stays that way.
Monitor light stays green suggesting a signal going to monitor.
Windows is SP 2, (or 3), whichever is latest.
I am preparing this in safe mode so networking OK.
Switch off and machine offers selection of start up options including safe
mode as now.
Registry?
(I have gone back with system restore twice to no effect).

What were the updates involved?
If they were driver ud's open Device Manager and roll back the drivers for any device
that was updated.
