Shut Down Problem

Hi, Everyone:

I received this message from my friend who lives in New Mexico.

"I've got automatic updates from Microsoft, McAfee, and Dell, so I believe
I've already to SP2 installed. I also added spybot and adware stuff that I
run every other day. There is one problem that has come up recently. I can't
turn off the computer nor put it in stand-by mode without having to push the
power button now. I do get to the blue screen where it says preparing to
shut down or preparing to stand-by, then the mouse locks up and it just
idles until I push the power button. ????????????????????????????????? It
always would turn off by itself before."

Any Ideas, anyone?

Thank you.

I don't know what the problem is. Perhaps if you gave more info....The brute
force method to fix this is to reformat. If you don't want to lose your data,
you can either back it up, or do a non destructive partition using Partition
Magic and reinstall windows on the new partition. Or, try to run chkdsk /r
and defragment. The problem could be because of conflicts in file usage.

Thanks, ksqwrd. I've passed your information on to my friend.

Hopefully, that's ALL the problem is with his computer. Good grief.

Again, thank you.

Great site, with a lot of useful information on this problem.

Thank you so much. Have forwarded it to my friend.

Won't it be nice one day when all of us can just turn a computer on and
NEVER have a software problem?)

My best wishes to you and your family,

Ernie
