XP sound schemes

At some point, perhaps after installing SP2 (not sure) most (not all) sound
schemes don't work. I can clic on a sound to be assigned and hear any of them
but they do not work on their own as saved. Example: no start-up or shutdown
sounds even with the default or a custom scheme saved.
I have searched for a fix on my own for weeks now. HELP

Sorry A lot of (not all) sounds don't work". NO sound schemes work.....
