Disabled Windows XP sound scheme?

Somehow (?) the sound scheme for my Windows XP Home + SP2 has been disabled!
I get no sounds at all for Startup, Closedown, e-mail received etc.

Opening up the Sound and Audio devices properties panel, there are two Sound
Schemes listed:-
1) .default
2) Windows Default Scheme
The only things appearing in the 'events' panel are:-
1) A 'windows' icon
2) MSEsgs_ContDact Online

I have checked that all the '.wav' files used for sound schemes are present.

Any ideas?
