XP Sound is not playing

No changes were made to the OS or hardware, but when I unplugged my speakers
from the card, then re-attached, the sound stopped playing. Here are the
facts:

1. The speakers work on another computer, and power is always on, and I
tried another set of speakers
2. The sound card, an Intel AC'97 onboard, is loaded and is listed as
functional
3. I check services, and Windows Audio is on
4. I tried another working sound card, same result.

The hardware is functioning, as I can hit the play sound button in "Sounds",
and it plays, but nothing is transmitted to the speakers.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like you might have a hardware problem. Perhaps faulty audio
connector on the mobo? Static damage to the audio ouput? Plugged into the
wrong socket?
