XP Software

I bought a lop top from Bestbuy, it's a HP. When I bought the computer it
came with software (XP service Pack 2) but it did not come with the basic
software package but on the bottom of the computer it has the product key
number. How do I get a copy of the orginal XP software?

If they did not give you CD's, then there may be an option on the start
menu to build CD's. This is the new wave. And its a gamble (in my
eyes) if you are making original XP cd's or if you are making a set of
Recovery CDs. That or there is an option on the boot screen to get to
a recovery partition, which is bad since its on the same drive as your
XP and if the drive dies so does your recovery.

Here's a wild guess, why not read the book or ask Best Buys?

Anyway, I just did it for a friend with an HP & Vista and the menu item
had me burn 4 DVD's. I'm only guessing as to what I did, I just burned
the DVD's as I pitied her and her lack of computer knowledge. She
would turn to me to repair it if the drive broke, so I was really doing
it for me.

Thanks Big Al, The computer did not come with any software other than XPS2
and of course the software for office along with drivers and a hp users
guide. Since I am not that good with computers I thought the only way to
restore my windows XP was with the original software. The computer was
infected and Best Buy said I needed the original software in order to
re-install it on the computer. I have been to HP and asked the question
several times but I continue to get a person who does not understand me or I
do not understand them (English), I get so upset that I just tell them thank
you and hang up in hopes the next I try I will get someone who speaks and
understands English as well as I do. Anyway enough of my ranting. Could you
tell how to access this partition?

When the computer is starting do you see an option that might be displayed
(for 2 seconds) that says Press F11 for recovery or something similar? If so
press the F11 key when prompted. That might get you into a set of Recovery
options. I've seen that before on HP systems.

You get it, or the instructions on how to do same, from BestBuy. Go
back and tell them you want it; it's the law. Are you sure it's not
already part of the stuff you have?

Google == HP recovery disks == follow the yellow brick road.

I have an IBM destop with XP Pro. To recover to factory conditions, turnon
your computer and immediately start pressing the F11 key. This will kick the
system into "system recovery to factory conditions mode", which is the state
the computer was in when it left the factory floor for the first time. Follow
the prompts to re-install XP. The whole process will take from 45 minutes to
an hour and a half, more or less. I hope this helps.

The OP has an HP not an IBM...
What happens when the recovery partition is corrupted?

from what i can surmise it sounds like you got ripped off by Best Buy. Go
down there get a manager explain your situation and get help. HP has the
worst customer support I have ever seeen so I feel for you there. You could
try calling Micrososft but you still may not be able to interpret their heavy
accents.
Best regards,
Kaja
