Hello,

Help in this area! I did a Registry mechanic check, found this in registry,,,

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software|Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.-----\OpenWithList

Looks normal, but, see the hyphen area next to' openwithlist?' How would a
personal name get into this area? I said, a person I know, thier name is
there!

Why? How? And, can I delete them? I ask this question before, only I got an
answer to something etirely different...

Thanks...
Jane

That area of the registry is so that Windows knows what program to open
a file with, based upon the extension. Obviously, someone had a program with
the extension such as "jane" and when asked what program to open it with,
checked "Remember this setting" (or some such wording).

Can you delete it ?? Go ahead, it shouldn't hurt anything.

Hi,
So,they had a program,(like what) exstention, my windows explorer opens it.
If not...ok, Im lost!

Give an example PLEASE!

Jane

Say you create a text file and name it "list.jane", whicih is perfectly
acceptable. The extension of this file is ".jane". When you double-click
on the file, Windows doesn't know what program to open the .jane file with.
It gives you a list of programs, and you select Wordpad. By checking the
"Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" checkbox, Windows
will remember that every time you click on a file with the .jane extension,
it will use Wordpad to open that file. This is the info that is saved to
your registry.

Clearer now ??

if you had a document named "fred" with no extention and tried to open it
....windows would ask what you wanted to open it with (and save that info ,
correct or not)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software|Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\FRED\OpenWithList

I would go ahead and delete that particular key , I don't see anyway it
would hurt

Files with no extensions do not have a program associated with them. You do
get asked what program to open it with, but can't save that selection.
