Seen several postings about this, coincidentally started getting same
problem.
Accidentally found one solution - I use cable, hence always on-line (and
modem has no "off" switch)
Disconnected the modem power cable during one nusually long closing-down
screen ... XP instantly shut down (normally).
And no, I have NO malware/spyware - system is totally clean. verified not
only by the normally recommended utilities, but also by external independent
scan.
Just a thought, might help some-one ...
