XP Shutdown

Jim Henley

When I attempt to shutdown XP using the normal Start/Shutdown method
the PC just keeps running and never goes into the normal closing
process. In order to shutdown the only solution is a manual power off
(hold button). Where can I find out what program is not executing?

Check your Power Management settings within Windows.
Get into Control Panel----Power Management---and turn on
APM ---Advanced Power Management .

I have the same problem-[ shutdown- closing down- saving settings-] and then
hangs. When I look at the taskbar everything has closed except my internet
connection and i can still 'use' my computer.
I also have to powerdown but then when I restert scndisk runs and startup
takes ages. By the way I cant find AMP in "power Management" .My computer
shows power mangement in control panel but no 'facility' to turn on AMP

Hi Julsie,

It's APM, not AMP (which is a term for the measure of electrical current).
APM is only available in non-ACPI compliant machines, these are increasingly
rare so it would not be surprising to find out that yours is compliant
(which is a good thing).

Broadly speaking, a hang on shutdown is generally caused by a conflict or a
program, or process therein, not terminating correctly or fully. What you
need to do is selectively terminate programs and processes prior to
initiating a shutdown to determine which one it is. First make sure there
are no running programs and that you are the only currently logged on user.
Then, before trying to shutdown, hit ctrl+shift+escape to load Task Manager
and click on the processes tab. Turn off some 4 or 5 of the processes after
making note of them. Then try shutting down. If it works, then the problem
lies with one of the ones you disabled. If not, then it lies with one of the
ones you did not and you'll have to try again. Once you know what the
problematic process is, we may be able to isolate or resolve it.

Also, a trojan and/or other spyware can also cause this problem. Before
going to great lengths to isolate a process, scan your system with one or
both of these products as well as an updated Antivirus program while in Safe
mode.

If you experience slow logoff (with Saving your settings for most of the
time while logging off), you are having profile unload problems.

If you see a lot of Userenv/1517, Userenv/1524 or Userenv/1500 errors in the
Event Viewer, download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

This decreased my shutdown time a bunch. Takes any where from 10 to 20
seconds to shutdown.

C:\Program Files\UPHClean\uphclean.exe is added.

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service gets added to Services and
uphclean.exe will run all the time. I am one that doesn't like to have any
extra services running, but I am sold on UPHClean.

Dear Rick, thanks for your response. I am using Onecare beta and ran
antivirus- none found. All adware etc removed daily using ADAWARE and SPYBOT.
So, i will begin trying to isolate the processes causing the problem and
will come back with the results for your further advice
