XP shut down

I resently install Win-XP Pro on my computer and now the shutdown requires
that I have to push the power button to turn off the computer. My other
sytems shut themselves down and turn off the power to the computer. Is there
a option I need to set to make it work that way?

If you mean it stops at the "It's safe to shutdown your computer screen,"
see below. If it's some other issue or the information below doesn't
resolve it, go to the link at the end of these instructions:
If your system uses Advanced Power Management, this problem is usually
caused by APM systems on which XP is installed because APM (Advanced Power
Management) is not enabled by default in XP.

Right click a blank space on your desktop, select properties, go to the
Screen Saver tab and click the Power button under Monitor power. Go to the
APM tab and select "Enable Advanced Power Management support."

If you see no such tab, go to Start and right click My Computer, select
Properties, go to the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button under
Device Manager.

In device manager, select the View menu, and turn on show hidden devices.
In the device manager window, you will now see an entry for NT Apm/Legacy
Support (If you see no such entry, skip to the bottom of this message and
try the suggested link), expand it, and bring up the properties for the
node.
In the device usage drop down list, select Use this device (enable)
Hit the OK button and then close the device manger.
You may need to reboot, but now it should shut your computer completely off
on shutdown.

I just had the same problem and read some responses. Here is what I followed and it worked...very easy to do
(P.S. When you get to the "enable" part, you may have to point mouse to red X and right click for that option. Good luck
POWERDOWN ISSUE
“Powerdown issues†are quite distinctive from “shutdown issues.†I define a shutdown problem as one wherein Windows doesn’t make it at least to the “OK to shut off your computer†screen. If Windows gets that far, or farther, then it has shut down correctly. However, the computer may not powerdown correctly after that. This is a different problem, and I encourage people reporting these issues to make a clear distinction in their labeling

When Windows XP won’t powerdown automatically, the APM/NT Legacy Power Node may not be enabled. To enable this, right-click on the My Computer icon, click Properties | Hardware | Device Manager | View. Check the box labeled “Show Hidden Devices.†If it’s available on your computer, there will be a red X on the APM/NT Legacy Node. Try enabling it and see if this resolves the powerdown problem (Tip from Terri Stratton). Or, to check the other side of the APM/ACPI coin, open the Power Options applet in Control Panel. If there is an APM tab, make sure the “Enable Advanced Power Management Support†box is checked. (MSKB 313290
