You system is much like mine. I installed XP on a new disk about the middle
of March.
Here is about how long it took:
1. Format the new disk - 1 hour
2. Install XP with SP1a - 1 hour
3. Install Dell drivers etc. - 1 hour.
4. Install SP2 - 1 1/2 hours
5. Install 83 updates - 1 1/2 hours
6. Install Office 2007 Home and Student edition - 1 hour
7. Install SP1 for Office 2007 - 1 hour

Then, I got tired and went to bed. I installed ZA, AVG, ATI, etc., the next
afternoon.

You would do yourself justice if you learned something about cloning or
imagiging your HD after you have installed your XP SP1a + DELL drivers.
How about trying this out when SP3 comes out?

Within 25 minutes you will be up and running your new system !

Hope this helps.

Just for the record, isn't that a first?

Of course it is a first. how else can MS screw up your system and make
you buy its much hated VISTA? Don't expect SP3 to do any miracles.
Indeed, expect SP3 to cause headaches and grief!!

Reviving a month-old thread for something *this* constructive? Sheesh!

I've had conflicting information that all Service Packs are
cumulative, and from another source that SP3 is in fact stand alone.

Logic tells me that it is unlikely that SP3 would incorporate SP's
1 and 2 and all XP updates from inception, since it's offered as a
"Download" via MS update service.

Can someone give me the correct information please?
Coulda EASILY found what you are asking for by visiting the MS site
for SP3:

"Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released
updates for the operating system."

This from the Windows SP3 web site: -
Overview
Microsoft is allowing Windows XP Service Pack 2 machines to be
offered Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 Refresh
via Windows Update. You may also download standalone update
packages for Windows XP SP3 RC2, in English, German, and/or
Japanese. Windows XP Service Pack 3 will be offered on
Windows Update when Service Pack 3 releases in the first half of
2008.

Note the statement "Microsoft is allowing Windows XP Service Pack 2
machines to be offered..."

This indicates to me that SP3 does not include SP2, ergo it is
unlikely to include SP1 either.

I have no way to force my logic to bend to whatever your logic read into
what you have given.

Service Packs for Windows Operating Systems have always been cumulative.
Taking the exact (and COMPLETE) line you have quoted and bent to mean
something it doesn't mean - instead of a partial quote:

"Microsoft is allowing Windows XP Service Pack 2 machines to
be offered Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2
Refresh via Windows Update."

What I see is this (translated):

Microsoft (the manufacturer of all this stuff) is allwoing Windows XP
machines that have up to Service Pack 2 installed to be offered the SP3 RC2
Refresh update. They can choose to install this beta or not (and knowing
where this comes from - it is a download for a registry change that allows
one to see the RC2 Refresh update through normal Windows Update channels.)

It indicates *nothing else* except to whom and in what way someone might get
SP3 RC2 Refresh (moot point since SP3 has gone RTM and it would be at least
unwise to get a beta of a product that has gone final.)

Logic and historical fact should tell you that SP3 includes
SP1a+SP2+Post-SP2 updates through the release date of SP3. If Logic and
Historical fact is not telling you that - I am now as will everyone else in
this conversation. ;-)

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) (dated April 23, 2008)
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsxp/0a5b9b10-17e3-40d9-8d3c-0077c953a761.aspx

"Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) stand-alone is now available for download.
Windows XP SP3 includes all previously released updates for the operating
system, in addition to a small number of new updates."

<- second sentence...
