Windows XP Service Pack 3 & KB 925877

I've just spent hours on trying to get SP3 to install on a Windows XP
Professional machine and only now stumbled across the article stating that it
won't install when "RDP 6.0 MUI Pack KB925877" has been installed previously.
I've installed XP SP3 literally dozens of times over the years and this is
the first time I've ever seen or heard of this problem; I only discovered it
by downloading the standalone version of the Service Pack and trying to
install it - all the other times it just failed without any informative error
messages that I'm aware of.
Why on Earth should this bizarre circumstance still exist this many years
after the OS has been out?
And why the Devil didn't Windows Update at least give me the same message as
the standalone "executable" when it failed, rather than just dying on the
vine and never telling me anything?
I've just blown a good 4 or 5 hours over something that should never have
happened in the first place.
The KB 925877 Update simply installed just like the rest of them did, with
no warning whatsoever that SP3 had to be installed first.
So Microsoft, what gives (and why play "I've got a secret" with such a
critical flaw)?
It's simply inexcusable this many years down the road!
How about a warning message or something, at the very least?

Have you tried installing it in safe mode?

Try disabling your anti virus and any real time anti malware apps. If
you do get it installed, be sure and reboot TWICE after the install.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed/attempted to install SP3?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
