Rename the Catroot2 folder, and then try to install the program again.
Start> Run>cmd>ok

At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after
each line:
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
exit

It downloads fine from the windows update site. The "installaing
updates" box is displayed and after 10 seconds or so a message is
displayed saying :-

"Updates were unable to be successfully installed.
The following updates were not installed:
Windows XP service Pack 2"

No further explaination is given.

Can anyone give me some clues as to why ?

My PC is a Packard Bell Imedia4506 with XPSP1, a celeron 1000, 128MB
ram, about 10 gigs of HDD free. Full spec of PC can be found here :-
