hello all,
Im mirre and a newby with a difficult problem on my daughers laptop. have
been trying to find the solutions for some days now and very tired and almost
close to throw laptop out of te window...

os is xp.

her laptop wont update windows. getting foutnummer: 0x80096001
have been everywhere and tried everything.
virusscanner norton, online kaspersky no help
reading al lot everywhere but still no solution
downloaded microsoft baseline secrurity but ; here failed to download
message firts and then a lot of faults
(could not acces the security update XML.file)
(file system; not all hard drives are using the NTFS system)
downloaded a register cleaner but no mirrecals :(

but theres more, cant login in hotmail, schoolsites, cant make account at
this forum that sort of stuff . it says it is nog able to make a HTTPS-
connection...

cant even copy and paste the things i did for email to this pc so i have to
typ.
its in dutch ,sorrie when my translation is not good.

I tried to download explorer 8 and then download it, i got the following
message ; setup could not verify the integrity of the file update.inf make
sure the cryptographic service is running on this computer.

I tried ; start , uitvoeren , cmd and then ok
in black box ; ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\edb.log*.tst

then I got ; nothing happens

then i went to option 2, systemmanagment, 2xclick servises, services for
cryptografie and go to properties, click automatic and start ,but that was
oke already.

then I tried to change the name of the map catroot2
start, uitvoeren, typ cmd and ok
net stop cryptsvc (enter) (message they stopped)
ren%systemroot%\system32\catroot2 (enter) (the syntaxis is not correct(have
to translate)
oldcatroot2 (enter) no regonize as internal or external program, batchbestand
or task)
net start cryptsvc (enter) the services have been started again...

then I had to remove all tmp*.cat-files from the following map ;
%systemroot%\system32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} but
dont know where to find this one and dont think it will have effect because
earlier steps already failed.

next methode;
start, uitvoeren, cmd,
after each sentence enter;
attrib -s - h %windir%
attrib -s- h %windir%\system32
attrib -s - h % windir%\system32\catroot2

dont know anymore what the message was but it doesnt work..

have done a little more but dont know anymore...

my daughter is able to open a website, like the homepage of her school, but
when she wants to login the trouble starts, and with al these kind of pages
where you have to login ,same problem.

done enough for today i guess, its almost 3 o clock in the night
hope some one wil help me please? thank you!!

greeting from the netherlands

Did you get as far as Method 11?

You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.
