Thanks for this. It is not the first article but the symptons do match the second - computer stops on XP Service Pack 1 restart. However, before I find out how I check the bios settings, the article says that it applies to XP Home and XP Professional. Yet when I restore the machine with the XP Home restore CD from the manufacturer it installs Service Pack 1 with the XP Home and it always restarts - so could this problem not affect XP Home and SP1 and yet somehow affect XP Professional upgrade followed by SP1 install
Thanks
Mik

| Trying to upgrade to XP Professional from XP Home - this upgrade goes fine but after XP Service Pack 1a is
installed the machine always hangs on login screen with mouse pointer in middle of screen. Even after
removing all "unnecessary software" and installing latest Nvidia display driver, it still always hangs after
XP Service Pack 1 installation. My only way to recover is to insert the XP Home recovery disk and start all
over again! I need XP Professional for IIS but I seem to be forced to run without the service pack which isn't
advisable. Does anybody have any ideas how to get around this problem? Thanks
