WinXP SP1(a) hasn't been supported for years now. Why are you only
installing it now? Did you just do a Repair Install or a clean install of
WinXP? If so, why?

You might be able to recover by using the following proceedure:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
How long have you been running XP without any service packs? If you can get
the machine to boot with the above proceedure, you should copy your data off
to external media, reinstall Windows and install SP2, SP3, your applications,
then copy your data back.

If you can't get it to boot, take the hard drive out, set the jumpers to
"slave" and put it into another computer or an external USB enclosure and
copy the data off. Once you have your data safe, set the jumpers to "master"
and put it back in the computer and reinstall Windows and your applications
as above.

Next time, keep your install up to date. Things WILL go better.
