Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2

After I installed the Service Pack 2, I cannot boot the Windows.
It shows the initial bios screen until the system starts to seek drives,
and then the screen becomes blank (black).

I contacted the motherboard manufacturer for help, and they suggested not to
install the graphic card driver until the completition of the service pack 2
installation.
I tried that with no luck. I didn't load any drivers so as not to have
conflicts, but the Windows working fine with the original XP, but cannot boot
if I install the service pack2 . However, some of my applications require
service pack 2, so I have to install it. What should I do?
BTW, my system is the following:

- Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI motherboard with Athlon 64 4000+ 2.41 GHz
- XFX 6800GT PCI-E 256 DDR 3 graphic card
- 2 of Hitachi Deskstar 80GB SATA-II hard drives on RAID 0
- 2GB PC3200 RAM

Any inputs would be appreciated.

Thank you

It could be a host of different reasons, so here is a link to get you
started.
The thing that is stressed the most when installing SP2 is," Is Your
Computer Ready?" There are several steps that should be taken before you
install SP2, and if not followed can result in same or similar problems that
you are having. This first link is a problem solver, the second is an
article outlining what steps you should take before you install SP2
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Boot_or_shutdown_problems_after_Service_Pack_2_installation

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Boot_or_shutdown_problems_after_Service_Pack_2_installation

I would suggest that you first read the articles, try the fixes, but, as one
suggestion says, if all else fails, uninstall SP2, your pc ready, then try
to install it again.

My computer has had a similar problem, but it was becasue after the
update, the computer was switching over to integrated graphics. All I
had to do was plug my monitor into the other VGA slot.

Thanks Ivee!

Could you give me the second link again?
You attached two identical links.
Thank you

Thank you for your suggestion.

I have two DVI ports on my graphic card,
so I'll try your suggestion.
Thank you

The only thing I noticed is that the check disk function in XP didn't work
properly before I upgraded to SP2. Is it due to the RAID 0 configuration or
simply due to the disk damage?

Thank you for your advice

As far as check disk, that too, could be a few different reasons.
What happens when you try to run it? Does it start, then stop responding?
Or does it not even start.
You can use the event viewer to help on that one.
Start>admin tools>event viewer..look for the red error indicators, check in
system and applications for anything to do with check disk.

Thanks lvee,

I checked the even viewer and found the bad block.
"The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block."
What should I do? Do I have to replace the hard drive?
Or is it fixable?

I'd appreciate your opinion.

Thank you

no, that likely is not needed. Go back to the event viewer and click on the
help & Support link to see what their recommendations are.
Also, download and install this utility...it's a bit confusing at first.
There are 2 ways you can use it, one is to download and copy it to a cd, or,
some offer on-line scanners, like my motherboard is a Seagate and Seagate
has an on-line scanner link in The ultimate Boot CD.
It has many utilities, most of which you won't use or need.
The way it works is, you find the test for your motherboard, and follow it
from there.
To find out your motherboard you can also download and install Belarc
Advisor.
Here are the links,
The Ultimate Boot CD,
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Belarc,

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

With the UBCD, once you run the test it will tell you of any bad blocks, and
if possible, it will revert those blocks to zero..anything on those blocks
will be lost, but that's a chance you take.

oh, I forgot, and this is a biggie. If you run the online scanner, or
anything from the UBCD, do it from I.E. It Does not play well with
Firefox, at all.

And, another thing..sheesh.. Some of the utilities don't need to be
downloaded and copied to a cd..it's all very confusing, I know, but it just
depends on your motherboard, and what test you want to run.

Thanks lvee,

I was reading some newsgroup on the error Event ID-51 "An error was detected
on device\Device|Harddisk0\D, has a bad block.", and beginning to understand
that it maybe an issue with on-board RAID controller.

Among other hundreds of threads in the newsgroup, the common denominator
seemed to foster around on-board RAID controller. Many of them had suggested
to use a PCI RAID controller instead of on-board controller.

I'll try your link first, and if it doesn't work, I'm thinking of switching
the RAID controller.

Thank you

Thank you so much lvee!
UBCD worked superbly!
Although it took long time,
it corrected the bad sector, (CHKDSK hadn't been able to fix the sector)
and SP2 was installed successfully.
I also changed the RAID controller
as well as the motherboard BIOS.

Have a great day!

I have some problems with my PC. First of all, it's working slower than it
used to. I had run the Scandisk, the ad-aware (SE Personal), the antivirus
(McAfee), I had also free my disk, eliminated the cookies, temporary files,
history record; I had also defragmentated the disk, but it keeps on goi'n
slowly, and not only while navigating through the internet, but also when I
work out of the network.

I had also a problem while working with the Internet Explorer (it's
something that happens rarely, but suddenly appears), that shows an error
message saying that it has to close. It is an access exception with a code
like 0000005. I hope somebody could help me. Thanks

We'll need the exact wording of any messages you are seeing.

Top reasons for slow performance (in no order):

1. Viruses and spyware
2. Too many programs running in the background.
3. User misconfiguration and other errors.
4. Hardware not up to the task.
