XP search companion repair

The search companion has no fields in which to enter what
to search for and where to search.

The patch offered by the Microsoft website only works for
an earlier version of XP, ie it's out of date.

The other suggested methods by Microsoft require a file
that is not on my copy of xp prof'l reinstall cd, called
msgr3en.dll

Any suggestions at all appreciated!
