XP search companion dead--"no response"

XP search companion has gone completely unresponsive on one of my
machines--not just on searches for particular text strings within files
but on all searches even just by file name. I tried using srchasst.inf
to reinstall the files from the srchasst folder on another machine
(mapped drive connection) whose search feature is working fine but no
luck.

What else might be causing this and how can I might I try to fix it?

Got it--momentarily disabled indexing service and all is well!
