XP says new hardware on start up

just did 98-xp pro upgrade.
After considerable effort, XP working well with one exception.
Each time I start up, it thinks I have added a new hardware(printer) and
opens an installation wizar). Run the wizard and it says "can't find any
later software than exists now."
My printer is a HP720c and the hardware and spftware have been here
throughout. It works ok. Can I stop this annoying loop?
Thanks to all for help with my previous boot.ini problem!

As this is a bug in the XP sftware, can I expect a patch to come from windows
update to correct it?

Thanks for the info!

If you did an upgrade, then you may still have Windows 98 drivers left on
your system. To fix this, remove the Windows 98 drivers and install the XP
version.

The CAUSE is as follows

This problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
.. The printer driver does not use Plug and Play for its installation.
.. The following registry key has become damaged:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\LPTENUM

Neither of which can be considered a "bug". So you should not be
expecting a patch from Microsoft.
