XP running slow and freezing

I receive a pop-up message from systematec antivirus indicating blocked
action on Windows Defender\MsMpEng. (PID 968). Also, the computer is taking
8 minutes or so to start up and is very sluggish. A scan revealed 2 Trojan
viruses, which are in quaranteen, but the problem persists. Another
systematec pop-up indicated that a virus was trying to change my home page
and so I re-set this. I have also noticed lately that my virus protection is
getting turned off regularly. I am not sure if these problems are related.
Can anyone help? Thanks.

Sounds like your sys is infected.
Download, update and run both Adaware and Spybot, both free.
You generally need at least two malaware apps as one will find what the
other doesnt.
eg Windefender didnt find some that SpyBot found, on my kids sys.
Try also an online scan from Trend Micro
