XP Repair Option on Install CD

While not upgrading from 98 or Me as KB 307153 is pointing to, I was however
getting the exact same issues and messages during the Repair Installation of
XP Pro. I followed the steps in the KB to rename the catroot2 folder to
catold, and then allowed the system to reboot and resume the setup of XP.

I was brought to the "39 minutes remaining screen" and it has been there
ever since. For what is now 4 hours, the setup program has been sitting on
the install screen, changing the Microsoft Messages and Features Screens,
Showing Progress on the Green Bar in the Lower Right Corner...while not
showing much HardDrive Activity.

The mouse is not hung, yet the setup seems to be going nowhere fast!

QUESTION

1) Has anyone experienced this before?

2) Would being on SP2 affect the progress of the repair? Basically going
back to SP1 of the original install?

A1. Yes
A2. No. It would repair the installation to SP1 and then you'd need to
reapply SP2.

From my experience there are 3 possible causes of this failure:

1. I believe that you will find there to be a virus [or more] on the HDD
which is causing your problems.

Take the drive out of the PC and perform a virus scan from another system.
Make sure that you go to the archive [if Norton AV] and then delete any virus
in the archive folder.

2. XP can also fail at this point if the video card is not properly installed.

3. You have a faulty memeory module. If more than one module, remove the
second and try again: if it fails swap over the modules, try again.
