xp repair installation stuck at 'installing devices' 36mins

Hi. I had some severe problems with XP, apparently caused by a virus,
so decided to do a repair install. But it is stuck at the point
'Installing Windows' - Installing devices with the time set at 36 mins
remaining. I have tried rebooting and it always tries to resume the
installation and gets to the same point every time. I have left it for
30mins to see if it carries on, but it does not.
I have disconnected everything apart from keyboard, mouse and screen,
and removed a USB2 card which is the only thing I have added since I
installed XP before.
How can I get out of this loop? I am willing to do a clean install and
reformat the disc as I have my important data backed up to a removeable
drive (disconnected at present). thanks

Yes,I think your best option is to do a clean installation after a severe
Virus infection as you mentioned.
First Delete the Existing Partition (s) and then Create a new ones then
Format them to wipe off all the Bad files/Injections left by the virus.
Then install your Anti-Virus then connect to the Internet to get update for
both your System and your Anti-Virus defenitions.
P.S Scan your backup before Copy it to your New installation!.
Hope this help.
God luck.

Thanks for advice. Sorry if this is dumb but how do I get strated with
a clean installation, because every time I boot up with or without the
xp cd in, it automatically tries to continue with the repair install,
and if cd is not in asks for it. How do I break out from this to get
back to where I had the option fo do a clean install?

Hi Mike,
Sorry for the delay, First to try to download the daignostic utility for
your HDD from the Manufacturer to see if the HDD faulty or not.
If it was faulty, then a new HDD is a must no escape, if not faulty then
read this great steps by Michael Stevens here:

HTH.
Best of luck

Hi,

I am having the same stuck in repair/installation loop problem. My computer
is not just stuck, but gets a BSOD as well. I have a BSOD to installing
drivers loop. My BSOD references a driver problem.

How did you get out of your never ending loop?

I would like to do a clean install as well.

Thanks,
Wishing

rebooting puts me in the same endless cycle of restarting and doing it all
over again.

Dusty,

I have a Dell, so this may not work for you. You may need to make some
adjustments for your computer.

The next time it crashed and started rebooting, I pressed F12 at the splash
screen(you may need a different combination). I then choose boot from CD.
Then it took me to the start of the reinstallation/repair screen. I choose
the reinstallation.

From what I have read since trying the repair, most of the time the repair
doesn't work. A total waste of time.

From what I have figured out, this happens due to a driver problem.

Good Luck!

Wishing you a Happy New Year!
