XP reinstalled on a new partition. Cn't delete old one.

I've just finished installing xp pro onto a partition of
my harddrive but cannot erase or format the old unused
partition. According to the pd it thinks its still a
windows OS drive and so protects it with its life. And
when I start up now I have the option to boot from two OS
even though one doesn't load up at all.

I've even tried restarting using the XP cd and trying to
remove the partition but it won't let me cause again it
thinks it a system drive.

If anybody knows a way that I can erase or format this
partition in order to make my PC better again.

if you have an old bootable copy of windows 98, then use this, boot up off the
cd choose no cd drive and then run fdisk, then you will be able to remove all
of the partitions

It would help to know the configuration and how you installed the on the new
partition.
