XP reinstall to fix internet explorer?

J

Jon

I've been battling ad/spyware/virus problems for the past
couple months, making it literally impossible to most
websites from IE and netscape (slower than most dial-up
connections even though I'm on a T1 line). I finally had
a network guy from my university's computer service come
in to clean it out. He ran spybot and hijackthis, ad-
aware and thoroughly cleaned it out. However, the
websites load extremely slow. I am able to download at
network speeds from other programs, but websites still
refuse to load. The university's service has advised me
to do a reinstallation of windows in order to rid myself
of the various 'wares' and fix internet explorer. does
this sound like a plausible solution to the problem? or
is there something i'm missing?

Hi,

It is possible this will help but I'm doubtful.
Have you tried going on the Internet in 'Safe Mode with
Networking ?

My system ran very slow and it turned out to be a problem
with the proxy server i was using. I would get your
network guys to thoroughly check:

1) Network card properties to make sure it is set to Full
Duplex (i.e not using the Autosense)

2) Network port is correctly patched (speed and VLAN)

3) I.P settings of your machine

4) Internet Explorer settings.

5) Check you event logs (eventvwr)

Good luck !

Regards,

Tim
