XP Recovery Console

I was trying to install XP on my C drive. Apparently, I loaded it on the E
drive instead. I didn't realize it until today when I tried to retrieve a
document. Is there any way to fix the partition and get the data back?
Will Windows XP Recovery Console get the files back?

P.S. How do I find the "number of the appropriate Windows installation?"

What do you mean, "fix the partition"? Did you repartition and format
that drive? If not, the data is probably still where it was.

If you did, stop now, and remove that drive. Re-attach it to another
running XP system and use data recovery software.

However, chances are not good if you repartitioned *and* installed over it
and have been using it.

Depends on what actually happened. The Recovery Console may not help you
at all.

P.S. How do I find the "number of the appropriate Windows installation?"

The lower numbers are probably the earlier installations.

I tried to repartition. It did not appear to work. So I did try formatig
the drive. I'm going to attach the drive to another computer and try using
the data recovery software. Thanks.
