XP recognized as Windows2000/download problems

I've had XP Prof since PC purchase in 2005, but evidently OS is being
recognized as Windows2000.
Issue first detected as McAfee most updated versions would not download,
(although at least critical updates to older McAfee Sec. Ctr. version do
work).

Installed SP3 on suggestion of McAfee 2ndlevel support, but then Windows
updates didn't work at all, so uninstalled SP3.

Current system is correctly recognized by
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/admin as Windows XP, 32-bit(x86) with IE7,
but for instance when trying to download Silverlight, it does not recognize
the correct configuration and says the system does not meet requirements,
although XP SP2 with either IE6 or 7 is supported.

So my question is, what can I do to have MS, McAfee etc recognize my correct
system information so that I can download updates properly?
