Post crash inability to upgrade XP & IE

My laptop crashed 3 days ago. Before that I was running XP SP3 and IE8. I
had to re-format the harddrive due to unrecoverable errors.

I presently have Windows XP SP1 and IE 6.0.2800 installed on my machine
after re-formatting from my disk. My attempts to upgrade these have been
unsuccessful. I was not able to get Windows Update to work (it is not
recognizing my product key).

From the specific download locations, I initially tried to install XP SP3
and then IE 8, but they would not load (errors about missing files).

Thinking that jumping from XP SP1 to SP3 was the problem, I then tried to
install XP SP2 using the link at OxpSP2.exe: I was able to download it, agree
to the service terms, but then got an error message: “The expected version of
the product was not found on your system.â€

I think I was successful in updating my copy of Word 2000 (now have 9.0.8968
SP3).

Any thoughts as to how to proceed?

You need to fix that first.

Did you install from a disk that did not come with your system?
