Windows XP SP3 Update & IE

I am running Windows XP home edition with SP2, and Internet Explorer v6. I
had too many problems with IE 7, so I went back to IE6. My question is this.
If I download and install Windows XP SP3, will it upgrade my IE to version
7, or will it leave my IE 6 installed? Charles Ranheim

Like previous Service Packs - Internet Explorer is left unchanged.

In other words:
- If you have IE6 installed and working properly now - it will still be IE6
after you install Windows XP SP3.
- If you have IE7 installed and working properly now - it will still be IE7
after you install Windows XP SP3.
- If you have IE8 Beta installed and working properly now - it will still be
IE8 Beta after you install Windows XP SP3.

You are at the 'best' point right now in terms of being able to still choose
after installing SP3 which Internet Explorer you want. If you install SP3
now - you can keep using IE6, install and use IE7 (and still change your
mind and revert back to IE6) or even utilize IE8 Beta and roll back.
However - if you had IE7 running and then you installed SP3 - you would not
be able to go back to IE6 without also uninstalling SP3 (first actually) and
then rolling back to IE6.

Thank you very much for your detailed reply to my question about the effects
of installing Windows XP Sp3 and my current IE6.
I was getting ready to install SP3, but a friend of mine also looked in the
problem and came back with this answer:
"Charlie, I received a reply regarding a question I asked on Tab
Computing..As follows: "If you are using IE6 it will update you to IE7 and
not allow you to go back to IE6. PC World has an article about it...

Hopefully the above is helpful to you."
This really blew my mind. I just wanted to Install WindowsXP SP3 without
losing my Internet Explorer v 6. Again, I am running WindowsXP Home Edition
at the SP2 level and all the suggested updates EXCEPT IE7. I had too many
problems with IE7, and would like to stay with IE6 for a while after
installing WindowsXP Sp3. The person that gave me this information I believe
is running WindowsXP Pro edition. Does that make a difference on how it
affects what happens to Internet Explorer? I really need to be sure before I
install SP3. If it automatically installs IE7 and I can't go back to IE6, I
will be in a world of hurt. Any additional verification of how it all works
would be greatly appreciated. Charles Ranheim

The person who told you this...

"Charlie, I received a reply regarding a question I asked on Tab
Computing..As follows: "If you are using IE6 it will update you to IE7 and

.... was completely and totally incorrect. You can correct them and direct
them here (to the news.microsoft.com newsgroups) if they have any questions.
Where ever they received their information previously either gave them wrong
information or they interpreted it incorrectly.

As I have stated before (and can be found in various posts)... Internet
Explorer, Media Player, the .NET Frameworks, etc - all remain unchanged from
what you currently have when you install SP3 for Windows XP (any version.)

List of fixes that are included in WinXP SP3

Otherwise - when installing something as major as Service Pack 3 for Windows
XP - do it wisely. Perform a full system backup (an image of the entire
hard disk drive would be the best..) and read accurate information before
continuing.

Key things to note:

Internet Explorer:
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To
avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If
this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows
XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing
SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair
installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for
that...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation

Some people experience an "endless reboot" issue...

From PA Bear [MS MVP]:
Workarounds:

[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool
that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing
[WinXP SP3]."

1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.
2. After booting into Safe Mode:
Start --> Run --> (copy/paste)
sc config intelppm start= disabled
--> OK --> Reboot into normal (Windows) mode.

The pcworld article does not say that IE7 will be installed when you install
SP3. It says that if you already have IE7 and you install SP3, you can't
uninstall IE7 without first uninstalling SP3.
At any rate, you should never make big changes to your operating system
without having a full backup using one of the image programs like ghost or
true image.

I installed SP3 without a problem. I still have IE 6, as I hoped I would.
Perhaps I will try IE 7 again later on. It is now my understanding that if I
install IE 7, and it does not work, I will be able to go back to IE 6. Is
that correct? Thanks for all your help. Charles Ranheim

As expected.

You can roll back to IE6 if you install IE7 and wish to uninstall it...
given you already have installed SP3 and kept IE6.
