XP Professional: Trbl printing to HP Deskjet 882C

I'm having trouble printing to my HP DeskJet 882C printer. Worked fine with my MS 98SE but recently upgraded to XP Pro and 9 times out of 10 when I'm trying to print something either from an MS app or webpage..I'll get a page with odd symbols and characters. It's driving me nuts. I've deleted the printer and added it back in more than once. I've looked for a driver on the HP website and they simply state that the driver is included with XP. I've checked the cable connection from the printer to the pc...lpt1 port..the hardware is detected and the connection seems to be ok. Prints a test page fine. I've gone through the Troubleshooting options provided for printing and it's pretty much worthless. Please help!
